Answers from Dr. Kaiser Question: I was wondering if you have had patients that have not ever been able to take anti-viral (HAART type) medications because of nausea. I am a woman who has been infected since 1988, but I have never been able to stay on any combos (the longest period of time was a month) because of extreme nausea, vomiting. I have taken anti- nausea meds. but they have caused me to sleep all day and night. When I stuck it out for that month I had very good results as far as blood work goes but could not live with the nausea. I'm trying Atripla tonight because my T-4 count has taken the lowest dive so far down from 180 to 94. I wish to live with this disease and will be ordering KPAX but wish to find a combo anti-viral I can tolerate, to keep myself alive. I would like to say in closing thanks in advance for your time and support from all of us living with HIV/AIDS. Dr. Kaiser replies: Hello. It sounds like you have really been struggling a lot with your nausea. Because your CD4 count has gotten to such a low number, you really need to figure out a way to be able to take your antiviral medications. I have helped a large number of people-who previously had only bad experiences with antiviral medications-start taking them. The first thing you need to do is to check to see whether or not you have any intestinal infections, such as intestinal parasites. Intestinal parasite infections can exist "under the surface" for years at a time, and may cause severe symptoms during times of stress, poor diet, or when new meds or supplements are introduced. I strongly suggest that you download the "Intestinal Parasites" paper from the home page of this website and review it with your doctor. It is also important that you try to take an antiviral program that has as few pills as possible. That is why I am hopeful that the Atripla will work for you, since it is only one pill per day. The MOST important thing that you said in your letter was that you WANT to get on an effective medication program. Overcoming fear of these medications and truly inviting them into your system when they are necessary is a very important step toward helping your body not reject them due to subconscious resistance to taking the medications. Finally, don't give up! Between your persistence, eradicating any intestinal infections, and keeping your pill burden low, I am confident that you will succeed!. Take care, Dr. Kaiser |
