Mold Toxicity: The Great Imitator


Symptoms associated with mold exposure can be difficult to recognize and may mimic a wide range of conditions. Early signs can be subtle and easily dismissed. Sneezing, congestion or itchy eyes may be treated as ordinary allergies. Headaches, fatigue, brain fog, rashes, hormone imbalances and other symptoms may be addressed in isolation without anyone asking an important question:
Could something in my environment be contributing to the problem?
This is one reason mold-related illness can be such a frustrating puzzle. Exposure may affect people very differently, and symptoms can overlap with many other health conditions.
I sometimes compare chronic mold exposure
to termites damaging a house.

For years, there may be little outward evidence of a problem. Yet quietly, day after day, the
structure is being weakened. Then a major stress occurs—an infection, surgery, emotional trauma or other challenge—and suddenly the system can no longer compensate, and it feels like your health is collapsing.
Mold Spores and Mycotoxins: An Important Distinction
This next concept is very important. Mold exposure can produce symptoms by at least two mechanisms:
First, mold colonies release microscopic spores into the air. In sensitive individuals, inhaling these spores can provoke an allergic or inflammatory response, producing symptoms such as sneezing, coughing and respiratory irritation.

Second, certain molds can produce chemicals called mycotoxins. These substances help fungi compete with other organisms in their environment. Several mycotoxins are known to be harmful to humans at sufficient levels of exposure.
Why Mold Can Be So Difficult to Recognize
When I evaluate someone for possible mold-related illness, one of my highest priorities is determining whether significant ongoing exposure might be occurring. That begins with a careful history.
Has there been a roof leak, plumbing problem or flood?

Is there a musty smell? How old are the carpets? Do symptoms improve when you leave the house for several days and return when you come back? Did unexplained symptoms begin after moving into a new home, office or apartment? These clues can be extremely valuable.
By the time you see mold growth, you have most likely have been exposed to circulating mycotoxins for some time.
Depending upon the circumstances, home mold testing can help determine whether mold is present in the places where you spend the most time. Laboratory testing can provide additional information, although results—particularly urine mycotoxin tests—need to be interpreted carefully and in the context of the person's history and environmental findings.
Mycotoxins can also enter our bodies through food. Grains, nuts, cheese, coffee, dried fruits and other foods can sometimes contain small amounts of fungal toxins. Testing positive for mycotoxin exposure, therefore, does not automatically mean that a mold-contaminated building is the source. Determining whether someone's home or workplace is contributing requires looking at the entire picture.
Most importantly, if mold exposure is contributing to a person’s symptoms, simply treating those symptoms without addressing the exposure source is unlikely to solve the underlying problem.
So, What Should You Do?
If you suspect mold may be affecting your health, I recommend beginning by testing your environment. Pay particular attention to areas where moisture is common: bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, basements, windows, roofs and areas surrounding plumbing. Don't forget places where you spend many hours, including your bedroom, car and office.

Identifying a mold problem gives you something enormously valuable: a direction forward. Once the source of exposure has been identified and appropriately addressed, attention can then focus on supporting the body's recovery. While mold can be a formidable opponent, it is much easier to fight an enemy once you know it's there.
