For the past several years, I've been immersed in one of the most meaningful projects of my career. After more than four decades of caring for patients with some of the most challenging chronic illnesses—and after my own journey recovering from ME/CFS—I wanted to write a book every patient—and every physician—could use when facing the challenge of a complex chronic illness.

Today, I'm delighted to share that this dream has become a reality. My new book, Full Spectrum Healing: A Functional Medicine Guide to Health, Wellness and Recovering from Chronic Illness, is scheduled for publication in early 2027 through Johns Hopkins University Press. As we move toward its release, I am excited to give you a behind-the-scenes look at the ideas, stories, and clinical insights that have shaped this book into a practical roadmap for healing.

This book represents far more than a recitation of medical research. It is the culmination of a lifetime of learning—from my years in emergency medicine, my work caring for patients with HIV/AIDS, my personal journey overcoming ME/CFS, and my decades long experience treating thousands of patients with Long Covid, fibromyalgia, autoimmune disorders, gastrointestinal illness, and other complex chronic conditions.

Throughout the book, I encourage readers to look beyond isolated symptoms and diagnoses. Instead, I introduce a systems-based approach that seeks to identify and address the underlying factors blocking the body from healing itself. Functional medicine has given us remarkable tools for uncovering these hidden drivers of illness, and conventional medicine continues to play an important role in diagnosis and disease management. Rather than viewing these two approaches as competitors, I believe they work best together.

One of the central themes running throughout the book is that chronic illness rarely affects just a single organ or body system. More often, several interconnected systems simultaneously fall out of balance, creating complex patterns of symptoms that patients know all too well.

In Full Spectrum Healing, I describe what I call the 5-5-5 Program:

  1. Applying the five cardinal principles of healing, which I will describe in detail in a coming Blog post

  2. Utilizing five critically important functional medicine tests (that most physicians never order)

  3. Concurrently supporting the five bodily systems necessary for healing. They are:

  1. The nervous system, including the autonomic nervous system that regulates so many automatic bodily functions.

  2. The bioelectrical system (your mitochondria) whose responsibilities include far more than generating the energy every cell requires.

  3. The endocrine (hormonal) system that orchestrates communication throughout the body.

  4. The gastrointestinal system, including the gut’s microbiome and intestinal barrier that influence digestion, immunity, inflammation, and even brain function.

  5. The immune system, whose balance is essential for protecting us while also avoiding the drivers of chronic inflammation.

When we systematically restore function to these five key systems, something remarkable often happens: the body begins moving back toward health.

One of the greatest privileges of my career has been to witness these clinical transformations firsthand. Over the years, I've cared for patients who nearly lost hope after being told that nothing more could be done. While every patient is unique and no physician can promise a cure, I have repeatedly seen remarkable recoveries occur when we identify and address the underlying physiological disturbances rather than simply suppressing symptoms.

Over the coming months I'll be sharing additional previews from Full Spectrum Healing—including remarkable patient recoveries, the five cardinal principles of healing, my personal detoxification protocol, and several insights that transformed the way I think about chronic illness. I hope you'll join me as we count down to its publication in early 2027.

My goal in writing this book has been to translate four decades of healing experience into a practical roadmap for patients and practitioners. Whether you are living with a chronic illness, caring for someone you love, or simply striving for better health, I wrote this book to help you uncover the root causes of an illness and discover how conventional and functional medicine can work together to restore health and resilience.

I hope you'll join me on this exciting journey. The best is yet to come.

Jon D. Kaiser, M.D.
