The health of your mitochondria determines how fast you age, how much energy you have, and whether you develop any of the following conditions:
Fibromyalgia
Long COVID Syndrome
Chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS)
Autoimmune conditions
Alzheimer’s disease
Parkinson’s disease
In my recent YouTube video, I describe why the health of your mitochondria is intimately related to how fast you age and what diseases you get along the way. I invite you watch this video for more info on how to support and rebuild healthy mitochondrial function!
The Mitochondrial Dysfunction Theory of Aging & Disease
You inherit all your mitochondria from your mother - about 100,000 of them stow away on every egg. When the egg becomes an embryo, the mother's mitochondria populate all its cells. Most people have healthy mitochondria when they're young. However, as people age, certain things occur in life that we know can progressively damage the mitochondria.
These include not getting enough antioxidants in the diet, excessive alcohol intake, substance abuse, infection with aggressive viral infections (i.e. Epstein Barr and COVID-19).
If the mitochondria become over-stressed, they can eventually overheat and die. Last but not least, environmental toxins can also damage your mitochondria. These include pesticides, forever chemicals, microplastics, and mycotoxins (mold toxins).
The above insults are called 'epigenetic stressors'. They increase oxidative stress and damage the mitochondria's DNA. Eventually, energy production falls below a critical threshold and a serious, degenerative disease occurs.
The process of developing a degenerative disease (diseases of aging) begins several decades earlier; and it is linked to the steady decline of mitochondrial health.
