Homemade Ginger Lozenges - Make Colds, Flus and Sore Throats Disappear!

Writer's picture: Dr. Jon KaiserDr. Jon Kaiser

Ginger is a widely available herb that possesses very significant medicinal benefits. These include anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and antiviral properties that are stored in the oils contained within the root.

Ginger is not usually used in medicinal amounts when used to season foods. Using ginger root to make homemade ginger lozenges and ginger syrup provides a much higher dosage of the compounds contained within this special medicinal plant.

It's important to use organic ginger in this recipe. You are concentrating the volatile compounds contained within the root and do not want to also be concentrating any pesticides.

Here is the recipe:

1/3 pound of ginger

3/4 cup sugar

1/2 cup unfiltered honey

1 1/2 cups water

Peel the ginger using a vegetable peeler or sharp knife. Then cut into bite sized pieces.

Heat the water in a saucepan to just below boiling. Gradually add the sugar a little at a time while stirring so that it dissolves completely. Then add the ginger pieces and stir. Finally add the honey and continue stirring for an additional five minutes. Let the mixture simmer uncovered for one hour and then let it cool.

Drain the liquid (save this!) and spread the ginger pieces out on a baking sheet. Place in a 200 degree oven for one hour and then let cool. Refrigerate the ginger lozenges.

The liquid (ginger syrup) can be added to hot water to make ginger tea. The ginger lozenges can be dissolved in your mouth several times a day to help prevent colds, flus and sore throats!

Please forward this blog to your family and friends. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday season!
